Functional Behavior Assessment & Behavior Intervention Plan (FBA & BIP)
Understanding Behavior Through a Culturally-Aware Lens
At California Behavioral Treatment Center (CBTC), we recognize that behavior is a form of communication. Our Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) services are designed to identify the root causes of challenging behaviors and replace them with meaningful, positive alternatives. What makes our approach different is our deep integration of each family’s culture, language, values, and traditions throughout the process.
We don’t just observe behaviors in isolation. We take the time to understand your child within the full context of your home environment, communication preferences, cultural expectations, and daily routines.
What is a Functional Behavior Assessment?
An FBA is the first step in developing an effective behavior change strategy. Our licensed and credentialed professionals assess your child across different settings to gather information about:
When and where challenging behaviors occur
What happens before and after the behaviors
How environmental, social, and cultural factors may influence these patterns
This process includes direct observation, caregiver interviews, and structured assessments—all tailored to honor your family’s unique characteristics.

Developing a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)
Once we understand the “why” behind the behavior, we create a personalized Behavior Intervention Plan. This plan focuses on teaching replacement behaviors, using positive reinforcement, and equipping caregivers with culturally appropriate tools they can use at home and in the community.
